ASCA has a vacant PhD position per 1 December 2009 as part of the NWO =
funded project Socializing Autonomy. The PhD candidate will be based in =
Amsterdam, and supervised by Prof. dr. Beate Roessler (UvA).

1 PhD position (m/f)
1,0 fte (3 years 3 months)

Project description=20
Whereas most contemporary theories of autonomy aim at providing an =
account of how an individual agent can govern her own actions, the aim =
of the program Socializing Autonomy is to develop and to evaluate two =
conceptions of autonomy that are non-individualistic in two distinct =
senses. The first one argues that an individual can be autonomous even =
though she cannot exercise one or more of the capacities that constitute =
autonomy on her own, but only together with others (as in cases of =
beginning dementia). The second conception argues that not only =
individuals but also collectives can be the subject of autonomy. In this =
way, socialized conceptions of autonomy seek to complement traditional =
accounts of individual autonomy.
The PhD project should preferably suit the second part of the program. =
The entire text of the program will be sent to possible applicants on =
request.

The candidate is expected to research and complete a Ph.D. dissertation =
