Progetto La Ruelle: another vision of poverty (2006-BEFR-23 / in the process of getting a new
accreditation number)

· Ente di accoglienza: La Ruelle. It is a small organisation of street workers which was created in 1991
and is located in the smallest (and most disadvantaged ) neighbourhood of Brussels.

The association works with children and families who face poverty and social exclusion issues and also bring
support to homeless people . The staff members and the volunteers organise all kinds of free-of-charge
cultural and creative activities but they also support, advise and listen to the local community, as a gesture of
solidarity. The volunteer will join different activities and will help the team to:
- Organise and co-lead indoors and outdoors creative workshops for children
- Organise and facilitate activities around books and reading: street library, story-telling, help kids to read
books, read stories to children, etc. These activities are held on a very regular basis in several outdoors
public places of the neighbourhood.
- Visit homeless people in stations, morally support them and help them maintain some sense of social
belonging. Now and then, assist them with administration or technical information they may need.
All year long, parties for kids and poor families are organised to celebrate different events (Easter,
Halloween, New Year’s Eve, birthdays, etc.). The team of La Ruelle sometimes also visits poor families who
need some kind of assistance or advice. The volunteer will, of course, be associated to any kind of special
event organised by La Ruelle during his/her voluntary service.
· Eventuali requisiti preferenziali: forte motivazione a lavorare con
- i bambini (Ruelle organise deux à trois fois par semaine des ateliers de peinture , de bricolage,
d'artisanat pour les enfants défavorisés du quartier, âgés de 2 à 13 ans. Leurs familles sont invitées à
prendre part à certaines activités ; un service social de proximité leur est proposé: soutien juridique,
administratif, réflexion, éducation, médiation, premier conseil juridique)
- le persone senza fissa dimora (4 fois par semaine, 2 travailleurs sociaux de la Ruelle vont à la
rencontre des SDF (Sans Domicile Fixe) à la gare du Nord et dans certaines stations de métro. La
Ruelle leur apporte un regard amical, une oreille disponible, ainsi que des conseils ou une aide
administrative si besoin)
