The Courant Research Centre "EDRIS-Education and Religion from Early Imperial Roman Times to the Classical Period of Islam" has recently been established at the University of Göttingen. The objective of the Centre is to investigate educational concepts and methods and their interaction with religious beliefs from the Early Imperial Period of the Roman Empire to the Classical Period of Islam, i.e. from the first to the thirteenth century CE. Interdisciplinary collaborative work at the Courant Research Centre will be carried out by three junior research groups, which will focus on three closely interconnected areas of study. The Centre is currently inviting applications for
one halftime PhD position (20 hous/week, 1000 Euro ca.)
for junior researchers within Area 1 ("Piety and Paideia: Religious Traditions and Intellectual Culture in the World of the Roman Empire; 1st - 4st century CE").
The position is devoted primarily to work on an individual research project. Project proposals should focus on the theme of "Schools in the pagan, Jewish and Christian realm - the formation of religious identities and boundaries" within the timeframe of the 2nd/3rd century CE. The successful candidate will be expected to concentrate on the pagan realm. We strongly encourage scholars from relevant disciplines, especially from Ancient History and Classical Studies, to apply.
The position will start as soon as possible and initially last for two years with the possibility of extension. The salary is in accordance with the German state regulated public service salary scale (50% E 13 TV-L). The successful candidate will need to have a University degree (M.A. or equivalent) in one of the relevant disciplines. Ongoing presence in Göttingen is expected as there will be an active scholarly exchange within the research groups.
