The present reformation processes at the university are a challenge for the humanities in respect of organization but also with regard to content. a.r.t.e.s. Research School of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne wants to rise to these challenges offensively, to contribute to the understanding of ideas with all their implications, and to present alternatives to monolithic explanations in the light of the complexity of cultural processes. These are key objectives for highly qualified humanities and arts researchers.
Due to its unique diversity of departments, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne is especially suited to handle the increasing diversification of the relevant fields of knowledge in their cultural contexts in an interdisciplinary way, to understand them in their historic dimensions, and to develop strategies to guide future action. The establishment of a.r.t.e.s. Research School aims at supporting the qualification of talented young researchers by combining, supplementing, and optimizing the existing resources and structures of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, thus providing purposeful, structured, and time-efficient PhD scholarship.
In addition to the demanded respective discipline mentoring, five thematic classes will be formed:

* Class 1: “Ideas and Epistemic Constellations in Antiquity and the Middle Ages”
* Class 2: “Dynamic Networks of Modernity”
* Class 3: “Communication Cultures: Mediality, Language, and Discourse”
* Class 4: “Knowledge and Science in an Intercultural Context”
* Class 5: “Life Studies: Human Nature and Culture”

The Research School forms the broader framework and a third level at the same time through their common concept which focuses on the five consistent key words anthropology – reception –transculturation – episteme – language. These orientate themselves at the main focuses and the fields of excellence at the faculty’s research and give structure to the Research School. In addition to the support guaranteed by the doctorate agreement, a.r.t.e.s. provides networking with national and international partners as well as a special information service and career orientated mentoring. Thus, Cologne’s historical and present importance shall be made fruitful as an internationally attractive cultural centre with high transfer potency for gathering also the top candidates of new international generations.
