The Center for Language and Cognition Groningen announces the following 3 positions in generative linguistics:

- a 4 year postdoc position (1,0 fte). Provisional project title: "Ellipsis and fragmentation in afterthoughts and peripheral adverbial clauses"
- a 4 year PhD position (1,0 fte). Provisional project title: "Reporting and comment clauses cross-linguistically, and the issue of discontinuous anaphora"
- a 4 year PhD position (1,0 fte). Provisional project title: "Prosodic features of incomplete parentheses".

All 3 positions are are part of a larger research project called "Incomplete Parenthesis", funded by the European Research Council. The general program investigates the relation between ellipsis phenomena and parenthesis from a theoretical and cross-linguistic perspective. Each researcher will carry out his or her own sub-project, as well as contribute to the overall aims. Requirements

- for the PhD positions: an MA degree in theoretical linguistics or a related field
- for the postdoc position: a PhD degree in theoretical linguistics or a related field
- commitment to the general project; willingness to cooperate
- affinity with generative syntax, and a broad linguistic interest, including typology, information structure, and prosody
- full proficiency in English; motivation to learn Dutch (if applicable).

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers the PhD's a salary of €2042 gross per month in the 1st year to €2612 gross per month in the 4th year (figures based on full employment). The full-time appointment is temporary for a specified period of 4 years. The postdoc position will provide funding for 4 years (1,0 fte). Starting salary from € 3,088 gross per month an 8% holiday allowance per annum and an end of the year bonus (8,3%) for a full-time position.

Status: employee (also for PhD students)

Appointment: 1,0 fte (including a 0,2 fte teaching load for the postdoc)

Affiliation

The candidates will be affiliated with the 'Syntax and Semantics' group of the Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG) at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen. This institute embraces all the Linguistics research in the faculty. The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the research training program of the Graduate School for the Humanities. PhD Students will also participate in the Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT).

The position requires residence in Groningen, 38 hours/week research and research training, and must result in a PhD dissertation. After the 1st year there will be an assessment of the candidates' results and the progress of the project to decide whether the employment will be continued.
