DURHAM UNIVERSITY (UK):
Two One-Year Masters Studentships in the History of Medicine at Durham =
University, UK, for the academic year 2011-12
The Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease (CHMD) invites =
applications for two one-year Masters studentships in the History of =
Medicine. The closing date for applications is 28 February 2011.
The studentships are part of the Taught Masters Programme in History and =
Philosophy of Science and Medicine (HPSM) of Durham University's =
Department of Philosophy, the CHMD, and the School of Medicine & Health. =
It is placed within the framework of the Northern Centre for the History =
of Medicine (http://www.nchm.ac.uk), a partnership between the =
universities of Durham and Newcastle, and funded from a Wellcome Trust =
Strategic Award which has been awarded to the Northern Centre. The =
studentships will be available as of October 2011.
* The first Masters studentship (=A3 10,000) covers fees at home/EU =
level and maintenance.
* The second Masters studentship (=A3 5,000) will only cover the fees at =
home/EU level.
The successful applicants will register for the HPSM programme offered =
by the Department of Philosophy and the School of Medicine and Health as =
of October 2011.
This one-year (two years part-time) programme Masters Programme combines =
historical and philosophical approaches to medicine and science. In =
particular, it provides students with a deeper understanding of =
historical, cultural and philosophical issues in science and medicine =
from Antiquity up to the present day. One of its primary aims is to show =
students how the humanities are relevant to a deeper understanding of =
past and present medical and scientific issues. The breadth of the =
course's methods ranges from socio-cultural models to analytical =
approaches. The programme provides the necessary research training that =
will either link into further PhD study or act as a stand alone MA; and =
candidates who have successfully completed the programme will be =
eligible to take part in the annual Wellcome Trust PhD studentship =
competition. Further information on the HPSM Masters Programme and the =
teaching staff can be found on the website at =
http://www.dur.ac.uk/hpsm.ma/.
Applications for the studentships are invited from highly motivated =
graduates from various backgrounds including arts, history and humanities =
subjects, science, and medicine (including medical students who have =
successfully completed stage 4 - i.e. four years of medical training - =
of a qualifying medical degree at an approved university) with a high =
mark on their first degree (or equivalent) who will commit themselves to =
a dissertation on a subject within the History of Medicine. Overseas =
applicants are also strongly encouraged to apply.
We are particularly welcoming applications that link into research =
interests within the CHMD, whose current research theme is 'Knowledge, =
Ethics and Representations of Medicine and Health: Historical =
Perspectives'. Please see the CHMD website for further information =
(www.dur.ac.uk/chmd) or email the Director, Prof. Holger Maehle =
