The Munich School of Ancient Philosophy (MUSAΦ) at Ludwig Maximi=
lians
Universit=E4t, Munich (LMU), is pleased to invite applications for Ph. D.=
stipends. Established in the fall of 2010, MUSAΦ is jointly dire=
cted by
Professors Christof Rapp (Philosophy) and Oliver Primavesi (Classics).
Additional faculty members in both departments teach and carry out resear=
ch
in ancient philosophy. MUSAΦ also regularly invites guest facult=
y and
visiting fellows to the program. During the upcoming academic year, MUSA&=
amp;#934;
expects to welcome Alan Code and Pieter Sjoerd Hasper.
MUSAΦ is devoted to the study of all areas of ancient Greek and =
Roman
philosophy. Drawing jointly from LMU=92s Philosophy and Classics Departme=
nts,
MUSAΦ combines the skills that each discipline brings to the stu=
dy of
ancient philosophy and offers the Ph. D. through both departments. Alongs=
ide
dissertation research, doctoral students in MUSAΦ will have the =
opportunity
to participate in advanced seminars and reading groups with leading
scholars, as well as exchange programs with other top universities. Three=
year doctoral stipends cover the period of dissertation research and
writing. Dissertations may be written in English or German. The current
round of applications is for enrolment at MUSAΦ starting October=
2011.
Beginning doctoral students will normally have, at a minimum, basic skill=
s
in Greek or Latin and a familiarity with the outlines of ancient philosop=
hy;
most will have an M.A. or equivalent in Philosophy or Classics and a
stronger background in one or the other area. Those who are not yet prepa=
red
to begin dissertation research should by all means contact MUSAΦ=
about the
possibility of special arrangements.
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis starting immediately, =
and
until July 30, 2011. They should include:
1. A cover letter describing academic background and interests.
2. A brief proposal for a dissertation project.
3. A sample of written work of at least 3,000 words.
4. Copies of academic transcripts from university study.
In addition, applicants should arrange for two confidential letters of
recommendation addressing qualifications for doctoral research to be sent=
