The Society For Libyan Studies and the British School at Rome (BSR) are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow in Contemporary Italian and Libyan Studies for the academic session 2011/12.

The Fellow will work on bilateral relations between Libya and Italy, within the wider context of relations between North African countries and the countries of the EU's southern border. Key issues include migration from Africa to the EU, using Libya as a transit corridor, managing urban development and the problem of rural-urban migration; energy supplies; and the black market economy between Libya and the EU. In addition, relevant research might include planning and development issues, the ways in which Libya's colonial past has affected continuing bilateral relations with Italy, and the issue of colonial reparations, all of which remain important topics.

The successful candidate will receive free board and lodging at the British School at Rome, and in addition a stipend of £450 p.c.m (£600 for August when the BSR is self-catering only).

The Fellow will be expected to:

1) organise and run a workshop on key issues in Libyan-Italian relations, including those outlined above, to which the BSR will contribute up to £1000.

2) submit a paper on a major aspect of Libyan-Italian relations for Libyan Studies

3) submit a grant application to e.g. ESRC or another major funding body for a larger project on Libyan-Italian relations to continue the BSR-SLS collaboration.

The Fellow will also be expected to play a full part in the BSR's academic community. The period of engagement will be one calendar year, beginning on 1 October 2011.

Candidates must have a doctorate and track record of research in a relevant field.
