We invite applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in =
the Department of Philosophy, to work on the project "Understanding Informa=
tion Quality Standards and their Challenges".
The position is full-time, fixed term (18 months). The project is a two-yea=
r, knowledge-transfer, in collaboration with Google UK. It is to be funded =
by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) through a grant award=
ed to the PI (principal investigator), Prof Luciano Floridi.
Here is a very short description of the project. "The most developed societ=
ies live by information, and Information and Communication Technologies (IC=
Ts) keep them constantly oxygenated. So it seems essential that we should u=
nderstand what it means for such information to be of high-quality, and hen=
ce fully and safely exploitable as a fruitful resource. And yet, we current=
ly have only some approximate and contrasting views about information quali=
ty (IQ) standards. The project seeks to fill this serious gap in our unders=
tanding, through a two-way knowledge transfer between the PI's theoretical =
expertise in the philosophy and ethics of information and Google's applied =
know-how in information management."
You will be based in the Philosophy Department and collaborate full time in=
the project. The starting date of the project is expected to be the first =
of January 2012.
You will hold a doctorate or should do so by the starting date, in a releva=
nt discipline such as epistemology, logic, philosophy of information, or ph=
ilosophy of science. You will have a proven research record in philosophy, =
preferably some expertise in information theory or computing, and an abilit=
y to work across disciplines.
