ERC funded PhD Studentships in Modern Japanese History
University of Cambridge -Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies

Limit of tenure: 4 years.

Two 4-year fully funded PhD positions are available as part of a new European Research Council (ERC) project focusing on Japanese history within East Asia. The positions are based in the Department of East Asian Studies, in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge, UK. Applying candidates are expected to have adequate reading knowledge of at least one East Asian language (preferably Japanese but not mandatory), and the equivalent of a Masters degree in history, or another humanities or social science subject with clear interest in the political, social, or military history of modern Japan and East Asia;
- experience in archival research;
- a strong interest for relevant theory;
- an outstanding record of undergraduate and Master's degree work. The two PhD students will be expected to conduct their own research and assist with the production of the international workshops of the program.

Applicants must have:

A First Class (or a high 2:1) degree in a relevant discipline such as history, East Asian Studies, politics, international relations, law, etc.
Preferably have a Master's degree in a relevant discipline; have at least a solid reading knowledge of one East Asian language (preferably Japanese, but Korean or Chinese may be acceptable)
