The Centre for Research in Linguistics and Language Sciences (CRiLLS) hosts one of the largest communities of researchers in linguistics and language sciences in the country, with approximately 40 staff and 220 postgraduate students. Our research specialisms and supervisory expertise include: syntax (comparative, evolutionary, historical, acquisitional), phonology, morphology, phonetics, semantics, pragmatics and discourse analysis, first and second language acquisition, sociolinguistics historical linguistics, and dialectology. Our research covers a wide range of languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Bengali, English (in all its forms), Dutch, French, German, Italian, Quechua, Scandinavian languages, Spanish and Welsh.
For 2013 entry, Linguistics is able to submit nominations to an open competition across all the University's BGP subjects for the award of an additional two AHRC doctoral studentships through the AHRC's Doctoral Awards scheme. This scheme provides studentships to enable students to undertake and complete a doctoral degree (PhD).
Home (UK) students and those EU students who have been resident in the UK for a minimum of three years are eligible for a full award comprising fees and an annual, tax free stipend to £13,590 (2012/13 rates). Other EU students are eligible for a fees-only award. Eligibility
You should be intending to undertake a PhD in Linguistics at Newcastle University in September 2013 and meet the AHRC's student eligibility criteria. Full information on AHRC eligibility criteria can be found in Section 7 and Annex A of the AHRC Studentship Funding Guide (PDF: 500KB). Please note that if you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you will not be eligible for this funding.
