Overview

The School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology at Newcastle University will award one 3-year PhD studentship in Sociology to start in September 2017. The holder of this fully-funded position is expected to prepare a PhD thesis on the topic: “Asylum, Inequality, and Sense of Place in Peripheral Europe.”

The project is a field-based comparative study of asylum seekers and refugees in peripheral urban areas in the north of England and the Italian South.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must hold or be close to completing a postgraduate Master’s degree, or equivalent qualification if a non-UK applicant, in a relevant field. A minimum merit pass is usually required for the Master’s degree. Fluency in English and Italian is required. Research experience on refugees is desirable.

You must apply through the University’s online postgraduate application system. To do this please ‘Create a new account’ and follow instructions carefully. All relevant fields should be completed, but fields marked with a red asterisk must be completed. You will need to:

Insert the programme code 8200F in the programme of study section
Select ‘PhD School of Geography, Politics and Sociology (full time) and the ‘Research Area’ Sociology and Social Policy.
Insert the studentship code GSOC1 in the studentship/partnership reference field
Submit a personal statement, two letters of reference, evidence of your degree certificate, a CV, and a writing sample in English between 7,000 and 14,000 words (for example, a research paper or MA thesis)

This award is available to UK/EU and international candidates. If your first language is not English you need an overall IELTS score of 7.0 (with at least 6.5 in all sub-skills).

International non-EU applicants can apply to Newcastle University Overseas Research Scholarship (NUORS) tuition fee scholarships to cover the difference between fees for UK/EU students and international students.
