Two doctoral scholarships in medieval and late ancient philosophy,
2009-2012

The European Research Council-funded research programme 'Subjectivity =
and Selfhood in the Arabic and Latin Traditions' (SSALT, Director: Prof. =
Taneli Kukkonen) is pleased to announce two doctoral scholarships in the =
history of philosophy. Applications are received until October 11, 2008, =
with results announced in late October and work by successful applicants =
expected to start in early 2009. Reviewed annually, the scholarships are =
extendable for a maximum of four years or until the completion of the =
project in December 2012.
Successful applicants shall pursue a doctoral degree in intellectual =
history from the University of Jyv=E4skyl=E4, with a doctoral thesis and =
supplementary degree requirements expected to be completed within a =
four-year time frame. (After the programme has chosen its two nominees, =
a formal application to the University of Jyv=E4skyl=E4 must be =
submitted.) The applicants will work under the supervision of Dr. =
Kukkonen. A working knowledge of at least one of the primary source =
languages (Greek, Latin, Arabic, Farsi) is required, as well as a =
master's degree in a relevant discipline.
The University of Jyv=E4skyl=E4 is a lively scholarly community with =
especial strengths in the history of philosophy in the ancient, =
medieval, and early modern periods. Thesis guidance and supervision will =
come from the post-doctoral and professorial ranks of the ERC programme, =
which works in close conjunction with the Academy of Finland Centre of =
Excellence in Philosophical Psychology, Morality, and Politics (PMP, =
director: Simo Knuuttila, webpage: www.helsinki.fi/teol/steol/pmp). =
Applicants are asked to submit a research plan in line with the themes =
of the ERC programme. The full SSALT project description will be made =

self-assessment and motivation for proposed studies, research plan, CV, =
transcript of relevant academic studies, and two letters of reference =
(sealed with the referee's signature--referees may also mail their =
