‘Minority language policy and planning in the context of sustainable socioeconomic development; with particular reference to the case of Cornish.'

Applications are invited from masters students for a PhD studentship at the School of Humanities & Social Sciences, Cornwall Campus. Applicants should have a background in historical studies, social sciences, human geography, area studies, business studies or sociolinguistics. The successful candidate will be committed to research that is applied and relevant to the policy community.

Supervisor: Dr Bernard Deacon

There is now a considerable literature that underlines the principle that sustainable development has to be interpreted at least as much as a cultural as a narrowly economic or environmental issue. The UN Millennium Declaration recognised that language diversity and the health of minority languages is an important component of sustainable development. This project explores the business potential of the Cornish language within a context of sustainability. It builds on the links forged between the ICS and the Cornish Language Partnership (CLP) and the work of the Partnership with Cornish businesses. The proposal would enable the economic and social role of the Cornish language to be clarified and placed within a comparative framework that draws on the experience of other European minority languages

How to apply:

The studentship will cover registration costs of £3,859 and a maintenance stipend of £13,400 per annum for three years. This studentship is open to Home/EU students only due to funding restrictions.
