Urban Heritage (UH)
The Institute of European Urban Studies (IfEU)

Call for Applicants

The Institute of European Urban Studies (IfEU) at the Bauhaus University Weimar, together with the Bauhaus Research School, in collaboration with the Università Roma Tre, Rome, Italy, is seeking suitable candidates (max 10 Ph.D. students) for the DAAD funded bi-national Urban Heritage PhD programme to commence on October 1st 2008.

The IfEU at the Bauhaus University is an internationally oriented system of study programmes which is intended as an answer to the changes in the problem horizon of urbanism, concerning all spatially relevant professions. The Institute offers postgraduate architects, landscape and interior architects, urban, regional and spatial planners, geographers, urban and architectural oriented social scientists, ecological scientists, civil engineers, and postgraduate professionals of comparable spatially oriented sciences a contemporary means of education beyond their original studies and promotes inter-disciplinary research with universities, research institutions, international organizations and NGOs worldwide.

Topic

The doctorate programme Urban Heritage is dedicated to the research complex of cultural heritage in the context of contemporary and future urban development. "Urban Heritage" is aligned with the existing International PhD Programme (IPP) "European Urban Studies".

It operates with an expanded concept of "heritage", transcending historic preservation and urban development policies characterised by awareness of history, and is thus topically innovative. This expanded concept considers the political and sociological constitution of the city as deserving conservation in regard to its capacity for social integration and local democracy. The intention is to search for strategies and approaches that employ contemporary challenges society is confronted with (demographic development, mobility, globalisation, multiculturality) to further develop a comprehensive concept of urban heritage.

Further information on the programme topic and methodology for research exchange can be found at

Application

The Ph.D. programme Urban Heritage encourages students to apply who are interested in advanced academic research, and careers in fields including urban planning, geography, social and political studies, architecture, economic development and other disciplines relevant to the Programme topic and to the IfEU research fields.

This programme supports the exchange of students for research purposes between the Bauhaus University and the Università Roma Tre, with lectures, conferences, seminars and regular meetings dealing with Urban Heritage.

The official programme languages will be German, Italian and English; financial support will be granted to foreign students for German language classes.
The IfEU does not provide Ph.D. scholarships. Applicants will be supported by the University and DAAD to apply for scholarships at funding institutions.
