Topic and general questions for Working Group E - Fundings

Where can a cultural centre find other sources of income than public funding? How can you earn money when public bodies wont support you? Creative ideas about membership cards, wardrobe etc...

How can you create a control system for the flow of money in the venue that doesn't diminish the trust and confidence that is built up between the volunteers?

Background on behalf of the Buenaventura:

Young people have always wanted a cultural centre in Castelfranco Veneto, especially for the last fifteen years. Time after time the people asked the municipality etc. to take action on this. The last four mayors in Castelfranco Veneto have represented all the different political parties that exist, and they all promised that they would take action and create and support such a place. The mayor in charge before the actual one (it is election time at the moment so we might have a new mayor in May)was from the left/central party, and this was the first time a left winged party was in majority in town (1997-1999). Everybody thought that this was finally the right mayor to initiate and create a social cultural place for young people, but as a matter of fact he did not do anything. At this point the people who later started the Buenaventura realised that they had to do everything themselves, even with their own money. At that time this looked impossible but as you know, we made it! As time went by we really felt proud about being able to run the Buenaventura without public money. Anyhow, we know about public fundings and project-money and we know that it would be quite easy for us to receive grants etc. from the province and the region. However, we would then feel that the project we started were based on what is on their agenda and not on ours and this is something we really fear. Also, we feel that all the energy we put in to searching for private sources of income will be worth it, since this will first and foremost depend on our will and capacity. Public money are more insecure, especially in Italy. You can spend months on creating a project and applying for money and in the end you don’t get anything.

Buenaventura today receive no support from neither the region nor the municipality.

For the reasons mentioned above we would like to get your help to concentrate and get to know smart ideas and creative solutions to find private sources of income, for you to tell us your centre’s secrets that by the end of the year help you to make ends meet. Also, we need your help to avoid making the same mistakes as you (might) have made during the years.
